  • The grab-bag quality of Takecha's Deep Soundscapes, which collected meditative tracks and sketches made over two and a half decades, works as a guiding principle on this remix package. A spread of producers dip into the release's varied, subtle delights, pulling out sounds and moods that resonate with their own discographies. For several—as befits Takecha—the results lean towards house. Raam's pillowy rework of "Calm Imagination" is the only one that doesn't quite land. It's a bit too sweet on the palette, every inch of the arrangement stuffed with candyfloss detail. Mike Huckaby does better on "Low Sentiment," a rock-solid deep house plateau of shuffling shaker-led groove and patient keys. He accelerates a downtempo original to house speed without sacrificing its languid mood. Henrik Bergqvist does the same thing with contrasting results. Takecha's "Rhodes Detox" is lounge-louche. Bergqvist's version is manic, its chords playing peekaboo through tick-tock drums and layers of squeaky detail. A couple of more leftfield reworks round off the record. Vancouver's LNS gravitates towards the darker "Factory 141," spinning an introspective synth number out of its subterranean clanking. DJ Sports retreads the gauzy jungle style found on last year's Modern Species for his remix of "Gradual Atmosphere." The original's airy chords sound right at home in his mélange of breakbeats, diva sighs and duck-diving bass.
