Locked Groove - Zillion EP

  • Locked Groove's latest EP takes its title from the club Zillion, which opened in Antwerp in 1997 before shuttering in 2002 due to a mountain of legal problems. The building that housed the club was demolished in early 2017, and, one year later, the Belgian producer's self-released Zillion EP pays tribute to the hallowed discotheque. The video pairs the title track's trancey synths and wobbly bass with footage taken from the club's glory days. Zillion captures dizzying moments of a night out a with heady mood (there's a reason the B-side is called "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea") and euphoric swells of melody. It follows recent Locked Groove releases by using elements of trance and progressive house, moving away from the crisp sound of his early records. Following April's pristine Progression EP on Just This, Zillion is relatively harsh. The title track is anchored by a hissing hi-hat, while the rhythmic backbone of "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" feels serrated, with languid synths stretching over its sharp surface. It's a forceful release, the latest in what's proving to be a solid year for Locked Groove.
