Basement Space - Cosmic Collision

  • It's hard to pin down the style of house music Slow Life has made its name from. For the most part, though, its releases have been defined by complex rhythms and dense atmospheres. Cosmic Collision, the debut by the Swedish producer Basement Space follows that mantra, but with a nod to broken beat and UK Garage. While still quite understated, Cosmic Collision feels more straightforward than many other Slow Life releases. On "Inertial Space," organic percussion leads into a warbling bassline, a gesture towards UK's garage's golden days. That bass gets grimier in "Cosmic Collision," as a breakbeat crackles underneath. "Flashback 95," skips the bass bins for spacey grooves and dubby synths, while "Dimensional Forest" adds a jazzy, whimsical touch, full of intricate percussion that's become such a hallmark of the label. Yet again, Slow Life has found quite the gem.
