  • It seems like Shifted has coined a new genre: business techno. He's probably referring to the world in which thousands of people flock to warehouses and super-raves to dance to some of the most repetitive DJ sets imaginable—massive kick drum, breakdown, white noise, repeat—while ice cannons go haywire. It's a world that Regal, a Spanish producer, wants to take "mainstream," according to a recent Facebook post. "Techno music is a business and it can be a bigger business," he wrote. "Many of you want to stay underground but then when there is 50 people in the club you complain." So is his collaboration with one of techno's most in-demand artists, Amelie Lens, a business move? Perhaps. Either way, Lens's tracks are the EP's best. The breakout Belgian artist's remix of Regal's "Fenix" is the heaviest moment, a slamming mix of booming techno and trance. "Render," a tunnelling acid cut, is less obvious. More dynamic than the other selections, it rolls with bleeps, nervous 303 snarls and a fidgety bounce. Regal's tracks, the original "Fenix" and his remix of Lens's "Render," are less creative. Their synth blasts are jarring and the mood is oppressive, lacking the subtlety that comes with inspired techno, even the stuff for big rooms.
