Gab Rhome - Madama Firefly

  • Gab Rhome was raised in Montreal and is now based in New York, but his languid rhythms and loose percussion evoke some place hotter and more exotic. It makes sense then that he's found favour with both Anjunadeep and All Day I Dream, and his latest for the latter is another pair of ambling, vaguely Middle Eastern-sounding tracks that you can imagine Lee Burridge opening a set with. Rhome, who is classically trained, said the title track was influenced by the Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, but "firefly" is an apt description. It starts with glockenspiel and keys, before a drowsy vocal and synth smears add heat to the mix and keep it simmering. "Do Not Grill Inside" is also deceptively busy, its loping pace disguising the sizeable cast of elements—bells, subtle tribal motifs, possibly a sitar, bird calls—that conjure mysticism and the desert. The tracks aren't in a particular hurry to go anywhere, but they send you to far-flung places all the same.
