James Teej - Hypochondriac

  • The Canadian producer James Teej has been releasing a steady flow of music for the past decade. His impressively varied back catalog extends from deep and sexy Get Physical singles to remixes of Paul McCartney and Wings (for which he and regular collaborator Timo Maas earned a Grammy nomination last year). His latest EP, Hypochondriac, is a compact illustration of his versatility. The nearly ten-minute title track unfurls in a hypnotic tribal beat and looped vocal sample that, just as its welcome wears out, is invaded by dreamy disco hums and psychedelic plinks that draw you straight back in. It's like mixing tracks within a track. "Ghosted" is smoother, based around a repeated triad and a mild vocal. The warm synth stabs and soulful singing of Teej's compatriot Jeremy Glenn lends a Chicagoan quality to "Existential," but it's bogged down in its "wondering," treading water without going anywhere. "Movement," like "Hypochondriac," is built around woozy filtered disco chords, and while the gear change is not as arresting here, it's still a pleasant trip. Both tracks are perfect poolside fodder, best enjoyed with cocktail in hand and sun on your back.
