Circuits - Coming Through

  • It wouldn't be a stretch to call Kasra Mowlavi one of the most influential people in drum & bass, which is largely due to his work behind the scenes on his label, Critical Music. Most of Kasra's productions have been collaborations with big-name, big-personality producers like Enei or Mefjus. But his newest project, Circuits, is different. It's a collaboration with InsideInfo, a relative newcomer, that establishes its own style right out of the gate: sleek, minimal drum & bass that hints at the subtle innovations of newer Critical signings like Hyroglifics and Sam Binga. The first sign that Coming Through isn't your regular drum & bass EP is the track lengths: only one is over four minutes long. "Resistor" and "Designer Drugs" both feature odd, near-silent intros that put an arty spin on a part of drum & bass tracks usually reserved for simple builds. This makes the intros almost as interesting as the drops that follow. Not that Coming Through is particularly intense. The distortion on "Coming Through" feels squeaky clean, while the otherwise violent sounds on "Drench" whip by like passing cars on a freeway. The title track is beguiling, with bright chords and an unexpectedly lush breakdown that knocks the track sideways. It's the best moment on an EP that takes Critical Music another small step forward.
