Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs - Leave A Light On

  • Orlando Higginbottom, better known as Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (or T.E.E.D.), is back with new music. Following early releases on Greco-Roman, the British electronic-pop artist gained legions of fans with high-energy live sets and his acclaimed 2012 debut album, Trouble, which featured a mix of leftfield club grooves and his own quirky vocals. He exhaustively toured the record—and his colorful rotation of headdresses and costumes—for a few years before abandoning the live space to focus on writing songs and what's turned out to be a busy DJ career. Nearly six years after the LP, we get the soulful ballad "Leave A Light On," self-released via SoundCloud to "break out of this cycle of not releasing music," as Higginbottom put it. The track begins with a sparse intro of Higginbottom emotionally dueting with a delicate piano melody and drum beat that, at the flip of a switch, is swarmed by a noisy jam of spiraling synthesizers, drums and crashing cymbals. As he repeats his slow and somber lyrics, pleading to a departing lover, the chaotic sound collage intensifies before finally decomposing into white noise. It's less bubbly and funky than some of his club-leaning cuts, but the new track is still a fulfilling—and unfussy—comeback.
