Trinidadian Deep & Lars Bartkuhn - Sonics & Movements

  • Producers who make spiritual, melodic deep house are like members of a secret society, weaving in and out of each other's discographies in a web. Take Sonics & Movements. Lars Bartkuhn and Trinidadian Deep both tread in the shadow of Ron Trent's legendary Chicago deep house label Prescription. Bartkuhn collaborated with Trent's close collaborator Anthony Nicholson, while Trinidadian Deep made music with Trent himself. They're also both house heads skilled enough to play in a jazz band. That all makes this EP, their first collaboration, feel like a natural development. True to form, three of these four tracks feature generous solos. On Trinidadian Deep's "Native Palo," his trademark hand percussion sets the foundation for Basic Channel-style pads and a tasteful synth solo. "The People" isn't as successful, the spotlight oddly focused on a maniacally played steel drum. The duo's chemistry is on full display on "The Parish," an ambitious house track. Over ten minutes, we're surprised by a catchy bassline, a disco chorus that Patrick Adams might have produced, plus guitar and sax solos. It's nice to hear two house music virtuosos spurring each other on.
