Steve O'Sullivan & Mike Schommer - Submerged

  • Some dub techno floats by like wispy clouds in the air, but it's the tracks with tough grooves and punchy bass that really knock you back. Steve O'Sullivan has explored many variations on the latter throughout his career, and for his Mosaic label's 40th release, Submerged, he teams up with the Deepchord cofounder Mike Schommer. It's a promising pairing. The thumping bass of Schommer's comeback record, Anamnesis, carries over to Submerged. The "Deepchord Negative Space Exploration" version of "Submerged" takes a deep dive into underwater caves of powerful bass. Halfway through, the track breaks down, which makes it especially impactful when the bass sludges into view again. The low-end has a fierce swing, complementing the short, staccato delay sequences. "Depth Charge Dub" has a similar sheen, propelling forward with tiptoeing hi-hats and shuffling delay that keeps the energy up.
