Francis Harris - Minor Forms

  • Francis Harris is so busy with experimental music that Minor Forms is his first solo house EP since 2013. That's a shame, because he'd become established as a master of subtle and affecting house. The American producer draws his dusky vistas as beautifully as ever here, making it sound like no time has passed. "More We Cannot Do"'s muggy vibe calls back to the yearning ambience of Harris's two albums, Leland and Minutes Of Sleep. Both records were introspective and heartfelt, and the somber "More We Cannot Do" picks up where they left off. At his best, Harris hits lows of melancholy usually only plumbed by the likes of DJ Sprinkles. "Minor Forms" also looks back to Minutes Of Sleep with its faraway jazz instrumentation, which sounds like it's coming from behind a wall of cheesecloth. In spite of the distance, a bubbling energy and careful strokes of melody make the music enthralling in its quietude. Minor Forms also has two remixes from Valentino Mora (formerly known as French Fries) that show him settling into a more mature stage. His "Underwater Rephase" is textural and spacious, its central lead swimming through the thick atmospherics like some alien invertebrate. The "Cosmic Trans Rephase" is as delicate and restrained as one of Harris's own productions, with each small sound gently shimmering. As with the original, Mora's remixes are aloof, isolated and searingly emotional.
