Diogo - Tanto Amor

  • Even though you're as likely to hear '90s techno as Ricardo Villalobos tracks at Club Der Visionaere these days, that hasn't stopped labels associated with the venue from honing the sound pioneered by minimal's leading artist. Pluie/Noir Recordings, the label run by the Club Der Visionaere regular Cleymoore, is back with its first EP of 2017, a two-track brain massage from Diogo with plenty of low-end power. Driven by a mean bassline and ultra-precise percussion, the gritty "Tanto Amor" isn't as romantic as its title ("so much love"). The kind of tune best heard on a sweaty Club Der Visionaere dance floor long after your last friend called it a night, it's a 14-minute head trip that's a perfect option for DJs barely standing ten hours into a set. The track never stays the same for long, with a few crafty breakdowns that refocus the energy on the dreamy spoken-word vocal. The cheerier "Wasame" is made with more familiar sounds. An occasional guitar lick nods to minimal's Latin associations, while squelchy percussion recalls other Club Der Visionaere-associated producers such as DeWalta. Less original than its A-side counterpart, it's a safer bet for busy dance floors. Minimal might be evolving, but releases like Tanto Amo remind us that there's plenty of room for traditionalists like Diogo.
