Das Muster - Fehlersuche

  • Solar One Music is one of modern electro's vital labels, with one foot in the past and the other in the future. Recent releases from the Jena, Germany-based label have explored complex concepts, including dips into experimental music and a series of EPs inspired by the Hubble Telescope. Most of the music has remained identifiably electro, but Solar One felt the need to establish a separate outlet to keep the traditional flame alive. Enter Between Places. The first release comes from the prolific Flensburg producer Das Muster, AKA Marcus Mumm, who offers a five-track EP that harkens back to the early days electro and Solar One. Fehlersuche might deal with classic sounds, but there's a satisfying heft to its textures. You could enjoy the jiggly synths in "Licht Im Schatten" and the gurgling bassline on "Aussichten" equally through a soundsystem or headphones—there's a simplicity that makes the sounds feel thicker. Mumm takes an elementary approach that works, throwing in classic 8-bit chords on "Vorwerts" and making a convincing Detroit facsimile with "Umwege." The crown jewel of the EP is "Fehlersuche," which features more globs of synth and a cheeky vocoder line, touching on the lighthearted side of an often po-faced genre.
