138 - Preston

  • 138 are a live techno duo from Los Angeles whose style is wild and groovy. It's about as much fun as you can have romping around a warehouse at 6 AM. Then there are their releases. The pair have only put out a handful of tracks, mostly through their own label, TXTRL. Others have landed on compilations, including the banging "Control Freak" on Mindcut, the moody and melodic "Cutting Teeth And Breaking Bread" for Mord and a swinging techno stepper for The Cast Project. Preston is their first EP after they were robbed of all their music while on tour in late 2014. The title track has it all: squealing high-end details that make your skin prickle, monstrous bass kicks grumbling below and some marshmallowy pads in between, which are just enough to take the edge off. AnD turn "Preston" into a delirium of high-speed sequences and crashing drums, with just a glint of light peeking through the cyclone. There are dark rumblings happening deep within the substrata of "Hold Your Horse," an otherwise ravey and uplifting track. "You Ain't Charles Barkley" bangs with a casual coolness that should appeal to a wide range of techno heads.
