Coucou Chloe - Erika Jane

  • Coucou Chloe's debut EP, Halo, was an intriguing introduction to an artist with a carefully cultivated online presence. The French artist has been busy since then. Now based in London, her second EP, Erika Jane, makes clear how fast she's moving. Where Halo felt exploratory, Erika Jane is so cooly confident it's practically blasé. This is especially true for the vocals—essentially rap murmurs—over Sega Bodega's delightfully deconstructed production on "Flip U." The same goes for "Stamina" and the stoned standout, "GS." There are unintelligible sample-stretched vocals on "Underdog" and quivering croons on "Sylph," which was coproduced by Kablam. Each track is an invitation to a different futuristic environment, with clever production tricks and a diversity of moods and styles. Coucou Chloe is clearly informed by a post-internet club music, yet her softer take on the militant beats favored by some crews—Janus, NON, Staycore—and a tendency towards slower BPMs is more sensual than hard-hitting. And while "Underdog"'s squelch and "Sylph"'s high tempos aren't exactly subtle, they're still funky tracks. Erika Jane's weirdness is accessible and, at times, downright sexy.
