Gauss - Resonator

  • Though very different, Jordan Hochenbaum and Jay Owen are a great match. Hochenbaum, who produces solo as Natan H, makes techno so polished that it feels slippery. Owen adds some crucial grit to Hochenbaum's work, and he benefits from Hochenbaum's way with melody and texture. The two have remarkable chemistry despite living across the world from each other. (Hochenbaum lives in Los Angeles, while Owen is based in Malta.) Grit is at the forefront of "Resonator," a surging dub techno track full of driving chords coupled with a crunchy kick drum. "Shifted" is even dirtier, with a rough-and-tumble bassline and white-hot snares. On "Odyssey," Resonator's other standout, the pair take on electro. Hochenbaum's trademark dramatic atmospherics—in this case, sighing pads—are cut by a broken drum pattern that drives hard compared to some of the duo's past work. Owen and Hochenbaum retreat for the final track, "Least Squares," an ebbing-and-flowing acid tune that would do well in an opening set.
