E Davd - Star Sign

  • Star Sign, E Davd's debut EP, is undeniably trendy. With funky basslines, glassy pads and pitched-down spoken word, it hits all the right notes between DJ Seinfeld's lo-fi house and the music coming out of the Canadian Riviera. It's a style that works for and against the new Australian producer. "Ice Moon" and "Low Orbit" are likeable, but they feel too on the nose. Nice synth sounds, happy-go-lucky melodies and drums with a skip in their step are more than familiar to anyone following modern house music. E Davd finds his voice on the B-side. "New Age" begins with the sound of water trickling and builds to a meditative funk complete with sprightly guitars, a rollicking bassline and pseudo-motivational vocal samples. On the eight-minute title track, he showcases his deeper side with a slow, chunky bassline and lots of pretty touches on top. It's the EP's lushest track, where even the cowbell is floaty. Natural Sciences often signs unknown house producers who are still finding their feet. Star Sign shows a producer in the middle of that process.
