TB Arthur - Footsie

  • TB Arthur's identity is still unknown, but his acid tracks are as recognizable as ever. Footsie, the latest 12-inch from the anonymous producer, arrives on his own (312) label and comes with a roller skating music video. It's a visual that captures the funky spirit of Arthur's work. But all in all, Footsie is dark acid techno, dominated by raw textures and mind-altering rhythms. The EP's synths sound scraped from the bottom of an overworked machine: wet and slimy, or fried and crumbling. While this gives the music a grimy feel, it's equally weird and playful. "Let's Do Footsie" is thick and gooey, its elements bobbing up and down like a yo-yo. "Venice Beach Acid" has a breezier groove, helped along by woody hand drums and a cruising acid line that, at one point, sounds like it's freestyle rapping. "Body Scrub" is submerged in reverb, quick scrawls and squelches that have an abrasive effect. On "TB3 A1," Derek Plaslaiko reworks a brutal track from 2014. The original might have bounced off the walls, but with this version's massive, brain-pulsing bass, everything's now stretched and melting.
