Florian Kupfer - Post Present

  • Florian Kupfer's music tends to move between two extremes: dark and distorted or warm and soulful. His most memorable records are in the latter category. There's a seductive feel to his house tracks, which are full of dusty grooves and alluring R&B vocals. Where Kupfer's recent work can be abstract or abrasive, other records like SAD Edits 001 and his breakout L.I.E.S. debut, Lifetrax, have an instant charm. The Russian label Private Persons attempts to capture this on Post Present. The EP is meant to be "reminiscent of the time [Kupfer] started out making Lifetrax." The title track was produced five years ago in the now-popular style of deep, lo-fi house with intoxicating vocals. But it lacks Lifetrax's smooth keys and pearly synths, and the groove is more of a march than a glide. The new material approaches a dreamy sound from a different angle. "Can't Love Life Without U" is a gritty and jacking club cut with soothing chords and hazy voices, while "Lubov" is a delicate ambient track that develops like a gradually fogging window. Post Present hits some sweet spots, even if it sounds a bit safe.
