Persian - Wasted Away

  • You might remember Persian from Four Tet's Fabriclive 59—his Terence Trent D'Arby-sampling UK garage swinger "Feel Da Vibe" was one of the tracks Kieran Hebden went to extra lengths to include. It was a rare moment in the spotlight for a producer who had spent several decades knocking out jungle, house and garage without much recognition. Soon after Fabriclive 59, Persian set up his Existence Is Resistance label to issue a glut of 12-inches. These felt like a dig through his unreleased archives. Wasted Away pulls out two Persian numbers from the Existence Is Resistance catalogue for the first release from the new Mysticisms label. It's hard to place the provenance of either "We Should Shout" or "Morning Sun," but neither sounds particularly modern. From the opening news broadcast samples to the yearning male vocal hook and chunky 4/4 rhythms, "We Should Shout" especially recalls a bygone era. "Morning Sun" begins like a jazz-funk masterclass before veering off into dreamy 2-step. DJ Normal 4's remix takes Persian's rave heritage to heart, coaxing out new levels of hardcore attitude from "Morning Sun." Fit Siegel's remix of "We Should Shout" is the showstopper here. A two-minute pan pipe intro is a brave move, but it sets the tone for a luxuriant deep house production that highlights Siegel's arrangement skills. The remix is just as beholden to house music past as the original, but Siegel's effort feels classier.
