- As the boss of Church, Seb Wildblood is a key player in the sphere of Lobster Theremin-related labels that release hazy house music with shades of nostalgia. He makes house sound cozy. Wildblood specializes in downtempo and chilled-out sounds, which he's mostly put out on his own labels. He uses his second mini-album to further explore his loungey sound. The opening track, "The One With The Emoticon," is the stuff of poolside parties, where Wildblood's signature combination of sleepy looped chords and bongos turns tropical. The record kicks into gear with "Plants," a mix of all the good things about Wildblood blended into one addictive jam. Overstuffed with hand percussion and ladled with a melody somewhere between celebratory and wistful, it's topped off with a jazzy interplay that recalls Moodymann and Theo Parrish.
"Deptford Synths," made with equipment acquired at a flea market in London's Deptford neighbourhood, is another highlight. It has a loping bassline and a happy-go-lucky melody that evokes lazy afternoons. Wildblood offers two more variations of balmy deep house with "Wet Summer" and "Mmm." They don't match the standout other tracks, but "Deptford Synths" and "Plants" make this EP a worthy purchase.
