Exchange Place Crew - Immaculate Inception

  • Exchange Place is the name of a compilation series but its meaning goes deeper than that. "It's an exchange place right here in Jersey City," Nicuri, who first appeared on the series alongside DJ Qu and Joey Anderson in 2008, said. "We hung out and exchanged records and exchanged ideas. Then we would make records together, just see where the energy would take it." Nearly a decade later, the crew has shuffled things around, but the synergy between them remains. They now DJ and release together as Exchange Place Crew, and their latest record arrives on Nicuri's Sound Theories label. Immaculate Inception is a showcase of the strange but intoxicating depths this crew explores. Joey Anderson sets the EP's tone with "Needles & Threads." It's soulful and cerebral at once, with a submerged groove brushed over with doleful pads and glimmers of piano. Art Gallery's "Enter The Polygon" is in the same zone, with cold and trippy synths that spiral over a marching house beat. DJ Qu's "Seizure Rhythm" is as its title suggests: raw and aggressive. Nicuri rounds out the EP with "Red Pill," a big, emotional techno track. Its entrancing arps get a flash of reverb at the peak, amplifying the impact.
