- Wisdom Teeth is one of several new-ish labels offering young UK producers a home. Like Batu's Timedance or Beneath's Mistry, it's an outlet for fresh talent previously associated with older institutions such as Livity Sound, Tempa and Hessle Audio. Wisdom Teeth hasn't always been as bold as its peers, but it enters its third year with an interesting experiment. The first instalment in the On Line series features non-dance floor productions. And in at least one case, it's an artist's first attempt at a new form.
As such, the EP steps out cautiously. Simo Cell's "Symmetry" extends the nocturnal moods of last year's excellent Gliding EP for Livity Sound. Without a rhythmic motor, the synthetic birdcalls and shimmering effects are free to float in zero gravity. A pulse pulls things together in the second half, and the odd sub-bass throb reminds us of Simo's allegiances, but the track winds up just as it hits its stride. Don't DJ is at his most subtle on "Übergang Zur Metrotram." As per the title, the track evokes an urban landscape rather than the ersatz exotica we know him for—its chuntering repetitions suggest a rumbling tram line heard through a bedroom wall. Only the odd sour splash of tuned percussion hints at his trademark style. The EP takes a friendlier turn with K-Lone's "Woniso," whose bell-tone mosaics recall a bubblegum Philip Glass. Gentle shakers and pitter-patter percussion help the momentum swell and recede over a very pleasant eight minutes.
