- Galcher Lustwerk and Alvin Aronson launched their Studio OST project in 2016 with an album of quirky house and techno sketches. Where Scenes 2012-2015 mostly aimed away from the dance floor, Eventide has DJs in mind. The record is worth buying on the strength of its title track, a warm and fuzzy house cut that will make an impact during warm-up and sunrise sets. The duo show restraint and sophistication with delicate flourishes that add color—there's a wistful tint that strikes a chord without feeling overly sentimental. It's accompanied by a "Beatless" version that highlights the synths' depth and richness.
Where "Eventide" nails the right tenor, "Ascension" feels melodramatic. It has a big chord progression that edges dangerously close to cheesy. There are ethereal delay effects in the percussion, likely drawn from the Eventide delay pedal that gave the single its name. There's also a drums-only version, which could be a clever DJ tool when layered with an extra melody or bassline. But the subtle sparkles of delay modulation in the drums, combined with a friendly but booming kick drum and a solid groove, give "Ascension (Drums)" enough character to stand on its own.
