Whodamanny - Primaria Industria

  • In an era when dance music gets weird as hell, Whodamanny, AKA Raffaele Arcella, still cuts an odd figure. His interest in the dance floor has been fleeting, opting instead to explore budget synthesizers and play the Casio MT-750 and Korg Poly-800 in the soundtrack music-influenced group The Mystic Jungle Tribe. Primaria Industria, Arcella's debut 10-inch for Lindsay Todd's Unthank, bears traces of all of this, but with one major difference: the inclusion of a club banger. It's buried at B3, as if to confound DJs. Called "Neuter Gyrum," it's full of the cosmic bleeps and bloops that have defined Arcella's work, but they shoot around an acid synth and relentless percussion. It's the standout on a varied record that flows like an album despite its brevity. Both sides begin with a Radiophonic-style ambient track that recalls Arcella's more experimental ventures. He seems as interested in sound effects as he is jacking drums and jazz chords. Arcella tries his hand at a couple of dance productions, most successfully on the head-spinning "Indigo Auctoritas." There, he combines his love of rhythmic synthesizer sequences for a proggy disco epic, sort of like a budget Todd Terje. "Wise Glaciem" is less compelling. It's built around a playful, funk-infused bassline, and sounds like an improvised jam with squeaky synths and atonal effects.
