- To see Phil Kieran, Roman Flügel and Andrew Weatherall billed side-by-side seems like the stuff of summer festivals. But here they are together on a 12-inch, beginning a dance floor-focused remix series based on Kieran's 2016 LP for Hot Creations, Blinded By The Sun. This loose and soothing tech house album was crafted using live instruments—no samples were used.
The British DJ and producer Andrew Weatherall, known for a synth-heavy and punk approach to production, reworks the LP's softly swelling closer, "Find Love." The track is a sunset slow burner, with a spiralling synth lead, tiny breakdowns and stretches of emotional strings and vocals. But even with these details, it feels bland. The source material seems out of place for Weatherall, which might explain why the remix lacks his gritty attitude. Roman Flügel's effort is more successful. It keeps "No Life"'s electric synth lead, but bulks it up with colorful melodies and big breakdowns. Still, it sounds restrained compared to what the German artist can do.
