KGIV - Mockingbird

  • The Interdimensional Transmissions sub-label Eye Teeth has a mission statement: "We would like to see American Techno evolve, and this new imprint is an attempt to be a catalyst in that arena." On Eye Teeth's latest single, Mockingbird, Israel Vines, who's been involved with the label's three releases so far, teams up with Chicago's Kit Geary as KGIV for the fourth. Vines and Geary have only appeared as a duo once before, 2015's Horizontal Ground 019. Its cold and heady sound carries over to their latest EP. Mockingbird is heavier than KGIV's last outing—this is, after all, American Techno with capital "T"—but the title track shows some patience. Its deep-seated kick churns forward, while echoing, metallic chords ring out in the vast space above. "From Fragments" is also solemn, but everything's a bit more intense—the sequences are tighter and busier, the groove more tunnelling. On the B-side, fellow American Jeff Pietro adds mutant flourishes to "Mockingbird," his dense, elongated arrangements made good on Eye Teeth's promise.
