Don't DJ - The Essence Of Our Being Is To Overcome It

  • By applying Euclidean rhythm and physical modelling to his music, Florian Meyer, AKA Don't DJ, uses more complex methods than most producers. On "Syrian Rue," from last year's Musique Acephale, the sound of crushed plastic cups is heard among sudden rhythm and tempo changes. On 2015's "Hexentrix," chimes tangle as though brushed by a slow, deliberate hand. He's found a natural outlet for exploring global dance sounds in the French label Fullfridge Music. (A Don't DJ-assisted compilation released in 2015 was subtitled Perspectives On Sounds With A World-Fi Tribe, with contributions from producers with ties to Japan, Egypt, Tunisia and the US.) "Difference," the A-side of The Essence Of Our Being Is To Overcome It, Don't DJ's first EP for Fullfridge Music, sees the German producer testing the line between play and provocation. "Difference" unspools tinnitus-like synths over lumbering hand drums and a pulse that yaps like a small dog. Meyer smooths the sharpest edges, so the effects pass by in swells. It's an acquired taste, perhaps the sonic equivalent of Icelandic hákarl (rotten shark) or durian fruit. "Repetition" ambles along more agreeably, with thumb piano dribbles and cooled organ tones. Where "Difference" antagonises, "Repetition" soothes. It's a great contrast.
