Born In Flamez - Careful You Might Tear The Sound

  • Berlin has a wealth of electronic music micro-scenes, and Born In Flamez seems to intersect with a few of them. Affiliated with crews surrounding local heroes Modeselektor, cyber-goths UnReaL Audio and Ziúr's post-internet party Boo Hoo, these many connections are reflected in the project's output. All of its material so far, which dates from 2014, features the same limpid vocal. But this new release on Infinite Machine is purely instrumental, and edges closer to the club. The pretty vocal may be gone, but there's still an ethereal quality to the music. That keeps "Careful You Might Tear The Sound" in the mood-music zone. The glassy synths of "50 Down" feel angelic next to percussive static bursts, while the steel strings of the title track provide contrast. But even with the mix of styles and an adventurous sound palette, the songwriting can feel a little too conventional. The mix of styles and an adventurous sound palette make for an intriguing listening experience, but Born In Flamez feels like a project in flux.
