DJ Guy - LNEG007

  • Though released in the last few years, the bulk of DJ Guy's discography was made in the '90s, when he was DJing in Cardiff every week and churning out tracks at an unholy rate. His dog-eared productions often channel influences from the era: Detroit-via-Aphex melancholy, or the energy rush of hardcore, acid house or jungle. LNEG007, featuring four tracks made in '93 and '94, starts with "Whale Song," which, as you can probably guess, is a gorgeous riff on ambient techno, opening with the titular keening sounds before coalescing into a hypnotic nine-minute groover. The downtempo "SXII90 Tape (Side A) Trk 1," with its glinting arps and warm harmonising bassline, also screams—or rather gently whispers—"chill-out." It's saved from the lounge doldrums by its weird warped sound quality—presumably a result of two decades spent in DAT purgatory. The B-side is less grounded in its era. "BX90 Tape (Side 1) Trk 2" is densely foggy techno, but a spunky syncopated kick drum saves the track's noxious delays from feeling oppressive. "BASF Ferro Extra Tape Side B - Trk 4," with its bright-but-sour synths and tom-led groove, recalls Hieroglyphic Being. Is there no end to Guy's trove of forgotten treasures?
