- Yaleesa Hall & Malin's tracks are enclosures, club-ready containers from which their restless ideas squirm to be free. You can hear the struggle play out on last year's "First Carol," whose strange sounds splat and wriggle like ectoplasm under a bouncy house beat. As if the original wasn't good enough, this remix EP features a "Stripped Mix," which is even more reduced and hypnotic. It's accompanied by three reworkings from associates of the duo, each of which pulls apart those gilded cages to release the strange creatures inside.
Mosca's "Pure Joy" version of "Second Lucas" is the show-stealer. He has described it as "letting off steam at 137bpm," and its wild cascade of 909 toms and beat-repeat tricks would be intensely cathartic on the right dance floor. Chevel heads in the other direction. His "Deconstructed Mix" of "Third Lucas" arrests its pneumatic swing in a series of stuttering freeze-frames. First, we get the drums, locked into semi-rhythmic holding patterns, and then the synths, crisp and alien. Asusu takes the dubby contours of "Second Carol" as a cue to explore his signature style. He gives its cool chords a steely glint and bolsters them with a Livity Sound shuffle: part electro, part something else.
