- If you have yet to hear the talents of Petter then it could be said that you have been living under the proverbial rock. At the age of 19, the young man from Sweden has already turned in some classic productions, with ‘These Days’ particularly coming to mind. This time he makes his EP debut with his Six Songs EP on James Holden’s highly rated Border Community.
First up is the already loved, highlight of James Holden’s Balance mix, All Together. Quite simply a great production, the track uses some nice crisp and quirky drum patterns as well as a bouncy baseline as it builds in the first few moments. A symphonic melody soon encapsulates the great feel of this production, while a choked vocal sample helps the production roll along nicely. A beautiful breakdown midway in must almost gain mention as it helps set the fantastic mood of the production. A great way to start the EP.
First up on the flip is Left Turned. The track flows quite slowly early on with clattering sounds as well as quirky melodic tones that soon lead into a kick drum that get the track on its way. Acidic bleeps help maintain the flow midway as the production invariably starts to get into gear with synths meeting a smooth drum pattern that help the production peak towards the concluding moments.
Following this is Dica Drive which sees Petter get his more minimal tech disguise on. The track flows with a constant hum while crisp beats roll alongside clicks of percussion. Smooth throughout, the track encapsulates nicely produced tech house at its minimal best.
The second disc to this lovely EP begins with the impressive Modern Eternity. The track builds in the early stages with a nice acidic riff alongside some crisp bouncing beats. Shortly into proceedings a beautiful melodic pattern takes control while a smooth baseline gives the track an irresistible groove. The acidic tones come back in before the track breaks down midway in re-introducing the main melody as well as some more melodic undertones that lead back into the beats in sheer style. As the track starts to hit peak time it appears the production may be closing to a conclusion, however the production finds another element by heading off in a different tangent seeing a vocal sample ride over acid twists and a new melodic pattern. Brilliant stuff!!
Tone Diary is next up, and it sees some broken beats come into the EP combined with some delicate piano lines as well as some deep baselines. Smooth atmospheric elements are also key to the smooth persona the production entails.
My Pretty Guitar follows this and eventually puts an end to a fantastic EP by Petter. Smooth warm melodies combine with subtle percussive elements to create a nice musical conclusion to this EP.
Well what can be said? A quite brilliant EP, and an EP that many veteran producers would be mightily proud of, let alone a baby of the production world at the age of 19. Hats off to Petter and hats off to Border Community for giving the chance to let the talents from this Swede be heard.
