Alter Mahnn ‎- Junge Frau EP

  • Longtime Perlon fans might have felt forgotten lately. Two of the label's defining 2016 releases, Spacetravel's Dancing Therapy and Binh's Noah's Day, were a step away from the outlet's more traditional minimal and towards the '90s techno- and electro-referencing sound currently embraced by many former house minimalists. Thankfully for the diehards, Perlon closed 2016 with Ion Ludwig and Frank Greiner's Junge Frau EP, a record that couldn't be any more Perlon. Junge Frau is more twisted than Ludwig's usual funky style. Both the A-side, "Ein Ganz Alter Mahnn (Brett Take)," and B-side, "Ein Mahnn (Dub Take)," combine barely there vocals, fat basslines and blunted percussion. Their down-the-rabbit-hole trips recall the hazy feeling of being at Get Perlonized! around 2 PM. The "Brett Take" hits harder, but the melodic "Dub Take" is the EP's highlight. There might not be a Perlon sound per se, but Junge Frau wouldn't be at home anywhere else.
