S. Moreira - Human Design

  • Human Design, the latest 12-inch from Sergio Moreira, is probably 2016's only house record to sample a Charles Manson monologue. Strangely, the point Manson is making falls in line with some of Slow Life's philosophies. "The system we live in is sustained by nothing more than a big lie," said the group's Laurine in an interview earlier this year. She and her crew have always had a political streak, but that hasn't come through in their music. That's changed with Human Design, which, thanks to the speech on the Andrés-style opener "The Truth," puts Moreira's worldview on the table. "The truth has been in your stockyards, your slaughterhouses," goes the sampled speech. It's paired with one the most straightforward rhythms Moreira, a broken-beat Jedi, has ever put his name to. It should appeal to house DJs who would have trouble placing his more abstract tracks in a set. "My Reality" and "That Was Just A Dream" are more like Moreira's usual sound—spacey and complex. The latter gets reworked into an even spacier ambient tune by newcomer Indi Zone, an alias of Slow Life's graphic designer Santi Uribe. It rounds off another strong release from one of Berlin's classiest labels.
