OL - Lada Passenger

  • OL is Oleg Buyanov, a Moscow-based artist and newcomer to Aaron Siegel's FIT Sound. Originally a hip-hop experimentalist, the producer has transformed his sound into warm, soulful and—importantly—misshapen deep house. On previous records, Buyanov either made these textures joyously groovy or rearranged them into something abstract. His latest, Lada Passenger, walks a middle line, focusing on fine textures and a stripped-back step. Last year, Siegel told RA that he likes sounds that are "really fluid." Indeed, this is the first impression you get from Buyanov's EP. The title track is a flow of textures with the improvisational feel of jazz, full of shy bass sounds, delicate percussion and lapsing motion. On the B-side, "Study Drum" and "Life Span" maintain a similar looseness, but they're more linear, centered on punchy dance floor grooves. Each is a soulful DJ tool, but it's the A-side's exploration of subtle sounds that shows a producer with more perspective.
