Mike Dunn Presents MD III - 88-90 Proto Acid EP

  • 88-90 Proto Acid is four surly tracks from Chicago native Mike Dunn, albeit without his signature lyrics. Dunn has donned many aliases over the decades, all with their own nuances. Aliases are his way of becoming different characters, like an actor would, he explained to RA's Matt McDermott. MD III is his grotty, acerbic project that debuted in 1988 with Face The Nation, a record that, 18 years later, would inspire Clone to launch their reissue outlet Classic Cuts. Tyree Cooper helped give that first one a funky, hip-house sheen, but MD III is really all about 303s and gnarled drum machines. "The Final Dayz" might be the best for its sauntering simplicity. Then again, the volcanic eruptions on "Acid Mayhem" and "The EL Train" are also wonderfully acidic face-melters. "Going Nowhere (1st Take)" is a pared-down drum jam that's rambunctious and magnetic, even if it does go a little off the rails towards the end. 88-90 Proto Acid is an essential piece of history for acid lovers everywhere.
