Dan White - Now You Are Here EP

  • It seems all too fitting that the first release from Melbourne record shop-turned-label Cry Baby would be such a varied offering. Local producer Rory McPike has made a name for himself over the past few years, crafting all manner of house, techno, hardcore and ambient under a few different aliases, always with a strong attention to stylistic details. For the Now You Are Here EP, released as Dan White, he dabbles in rave, IDM and beatless synth music across three tracks. The A-side cut "Precognitive Dreams" is the record's centerpiece, and will surely get the most attention from DJs. McPike taps into the break-juggling skills and euphoric sensibility that made last year's "The Hammer (Think Mix)" a winner. But with its added bass weight, immersive breakdown and Squarepusher-esque drum programming, this one takes those rave tropes to new heights. On the flipside, "VP3" and "Fearless Freak" indulge the less club-orientated side of McPike's talents, which, on the former, makes things a bit too fiddly and aimless. The latter track, however, is a loosely rhythmic synth comedown brimming with warmth and texture. It's a graceful addition to a record that covers a lot of ground without spreading itself too thin.
