Obgon - Overtake

  • PG TUNE's first four releases—digital-only singles—were vertigo-inducing dance floor bombs. Obgon's debut EP, Overtake, follows label head Philipp Gorbachev's lead, up to a point. Where Gorbachev's singles and subsequent album, Unlock The Box, were steadfast in their big-room ambitions, these tracks are a more acquired taste. In the run up to a dizzying arpeggio, "Roundabout"'s synth chords, roiled by distortion, land on unexpected notes. Ogbon is audacious in roughing up "Roundabout" to this extent, designing the track to disorient and antagonise. "Dust"'s humid, rubbery techno suggests a different environment. But there are misshapen sounds here, too, including a set of ascending notes that bend under some gentle pressure. In these two tracks, Obgon reconciles the severity of his sound palette to a wider range of expressions: stern one minute, ridiculous the next. "Print On Your Face" shares Overtake's terse, monochrome feel, but it's not as singular as the dramatic contortions of "Roundabout," or the sloshing momentum of "Dust."
