Various - Vol. II

  • DisDat is a new sub-label from ReSolute, an outlet linked to the New York party series of the same name. The crew's 2016 bookings include Rhadoo, Vera and Zip, making it one of New York's key homes for dance floor minimalism. With recent bookings like The Black Madonna, Roman Flügel and Juan Maclean, however, stripped-down beats isn't all they do, but stripped-down beats are all you'll find on DisDat, whose second compilation EP has tracks from Thomas Melchior, Barac and Vincent Lemieux. As far as mini-comps go, it's a diverse package showing off rarely heard sides of its three contributors. "Hillbilly High" is Melchior at his most twisted. Its main melody is a twanging bleep that borders on annoying in headphones, but it could boggle minds at a party. Barac is at his most housey in the jazzy "Ordinary Conversations," thanks to a live-sounding bassline that's probably the boldest he's released. Lemieux, a Canadian with just a handful of tracks to his name, offers the package's most emotive cut (this perhaps isn't surprising—producers like Melchior and Barac generally save their most personal productions for their own or close friends' labels). Lemieux's "In Momo's Jeep" is expansive and deep, with artful chords, vocals and an ascending synth tone—a welcome counterpoint to the more tool-like options.
