Echologist - The Flame EP

  • At this point, you know what to expect from a Brendon Moeller record. The four tracks on The Flame, his latest as Echologist, exceed six minutes, which is more than enough time to get pulled down deep into the South African's murky machine jams. "Kavorka" is the best example of how mesmerising Moeller can be. Twinkling bells dazzle and lure you in, while a dub bass pumps hypnotically in the background. After the rising swell in the track's midsection, all you can do is ride out the groove. Loopy head trips are another Moeller calling card, which you get from "The Flame," but he's best known for glacial dub techno, which the penetrating "Candy Mountain" offers. On "Dirtbox," Moeller takes on the role of peak-time provocateur, its drum work sounding under fire from strange noise and FX. After five minutes, even the drums sound like they've been corrupted. "Dirtbox" bursts out of the stocks, but by the end it winds down like an engine out of juice.
