Jack Murphy - KS1

  • Jack Murphy's music has steadily improved since his 2013 debut. Each release has been a more convincing realisation of his sound—namely, texturally rich techno with a melodic streak. The first EP on the San Francisco-based artist's own label, Knowing Something, marks a new stage in his development. Its four tracks show a greater depth and personality, and they're more diverse. Alternating between techno and electro grooves, and keeping a tight rein on melody, they suggest that Murphy has been following the nebulous new minimal scene. KS1's two techno tracks feature crisp, economical percussion and druggy atmospheres. "Haze" is the subtle opener, its melody a single sustained note that slides uneasily beneath a tightly swung groove. The needle-sharp snares give off swirls of delay that ripple and sink into an almost inaudible background of hiss and drone. "Third Character" picks up a sleeker momentum, though the trippy detailing threatens to derail it in places. The electro tracks are equally well executed. "XLXD 3" is full of spooky dread, thanks to its minor-key chords and noxious bass stabs. EP highlight "Wolfie Home (PPP Mix)" dials the tempo down to the mid-120s, gives the drums a muscular UK swing and swaps angst for sun-kissed sweetness. As if that wasn't plenty to be getting on with, Murphy caps off his record with a dreamy locked groove.
