Baaz - Untitled

  • For the last few years, Baaz (AKA Bastian Volker) has explored subtlety with his label Office Recordings. The bulk of its output comes from the German producer, whose initial two releases, What About Talk About #1 and #2, set the label's tone: deep, wistful and pristinely detailed. Alongside his owns records, which take root in classic house, Volker also releases other artists, such as Iron Curtis, Christopher Rau and the especially intriguing Trux. Two years after his last record, Volker returns to Office for its untitled eighth release. With four elegant, mellow tracks, OFFICE08 shows the producer in as fine a form as ever. The EP, a soft blend of ambient and DJ-friendly house, is easily Volker's most emotional work. "You (Can't)" is deeply melancholic, a beatless sketch full of beautiful piano chords and distant voices that feel like memories out of reach. The other tracks have similar moods but work on the dance floor. "Kraut House," a well-contained world of tiny shakers and droplet percussion, twiddles around a dubby groove. "Modual" is more of a floor filler, offsetting its rolling beat with twinkling synths and downy chords. On closer "Simple E," Volker evokes a quiet snowy morning with chimes and keys that fall softly through a serene atmosphere. It's nothing out of the ordinary, but that seems to be the point: these tracks are familiar and comfortable.
