- Christian S. (short for Schäfer) is a Cologne-based artist and longtime Cómeme affiliate. Over the years, he's contributed to the label and collective as a DJ, a graphic designer and, every now and then, a producer. Six Million Bassdrums Later is only his second record so far, coming two years after a debut that outlined his bold and eccentric sense of rhythm. On this follow up, the producer strips back his wild compositions by just a hair. The results are slicker and sexier, each track riding smoothly on a bouncy house groove.
The arrangements on Six Million Bassdrums Later are similar throughout, full of orderly sequences and clean, bright percussion. That might sound monotonous but Schäfer has a way of keeping things colorful. On "Give It Up," a low-key but punchy roller, clinked bells and woody hits brings to mind a cuckoo clock. The title track begins with a similar step to it but is soon slathered in bass wobbles. "Under The River" is coy and steamy, with snippets of instruments floating through a spacious but pumping groove. The record's gem is "Jonnie SDA," a glimmering, emotional house track that feels overwhelmingly cathartic, even before it reaches its peak of rippling arps.
