Frank & Tony - Under The Jaguar Sun EP

  • Like some of their other post-You Go Girl releases, Francis Harris and Anthony Collins' Under The Jaguar Sun EP sounds straightforward and undetailed to a fault. The New York duo's "Breakaway Edit" of Solo Andata's 2006 downtempo song "A Ballet Of Hands" has the most happening in its hushed groove, though that's due as much to its bouncy, two-note bassline as the source material's rich instrumentation. More often, the music occupies the blurred line between subtlety and mundanity. "Difficult Loves" has a gummy bassline worth dancing to for six and a half minutes, but the surrounding melodic haze starts to feel stagnant in its glowing stasis. There's a similiar issue with the title track, whose bubbly rhythm would have choked if Harris and Collins didn't let the ambient smoke clear out from time to time. With so many of the same ideas at work in the EP, the percussion in "Sargasso" is a welcome lively touch, complementing the rigid beat and quiet dissonance. Though the track does little more than hop and bob in place, it's refreshing to hear it do so with a clear head and a strong pulse.
