Various - Tales From The Dark Side EP Vol. II

  • "Man lives in the sunlit world of what he believes to be reality. But there is, unseen by most, an underworld, a place that is just as real but not as brightly lit. A darkside." So begins George A. Romero's TV anthology show Tales From The Darkside, a serialised spin-off from the horror king's 1982 film Creepshow. Whether it used possessed pianos, scheming vampires or envious aliens, each episode of Darkside supernaturally twisted an ordinary situation. A compilation series of the same name, from Philippe Petit's Knotweed Records, follows the lead of Romero's series, with ghouls and outer-space approximations teeming just below the surface of its unlit techno world. The first Tales From The Dark Side featured dark and skulking tracks from label newcomer Benales and Knotweed regulars Opuswerk and Gonzalo MD. Petit's "Indian Summer" was a balmy exception, but on Vol. II he offers the spine-tingling "Exposed." Anxious ping-pong notes and hushed crashes are hair-raising as the tense, chilly track moves through the murk. The distorted vocal and thunderous kicks of Julixo's "Own Structure" are more threatening, but the plush synth lines shine a bit of light on those shadowy sounds. Detroit's Terrence Dixon and live hardware duo The Fallen provide some sci-fi appeal. Machines whir in the background of Dixon's groovy, bass-led "Odd Numbers," while a misty substrata of synth modulations and radio transmissions lies below the rumbling bass and drums of The Fallen's "Interference."
