Tilliander - Nybliven Lots EP

  • Swedish producer Andreas Tilliander may best be known for TM404 these days (if you don't count his participation in Familjen, who are chart-popular in their home country). But he's been releasing records under many guises, most notably as Mokira, since 2000—often for such labels as Raster-Noton and Mille Plateaux. An avowed gearhead, his Repeatle Studio apparently contains a staggering amount of synths, drum machines and various other modules. So as you might expect, Nybliven Lots sounds good from the go. Each track has deep, round bass, punchy kicks and tactile hiss and fizz. Every sound is distinct but velvety. But all of this audio quality is only part of what makes the music easy on the ears—it's the deep techno groove and dub reverb that pull you in. If opener "Stettin Libau"'s heartbeat bass doesn't convince you, then the expert interplay of melody, low-end and percussion in the slow burning "Knapp Ledsyn," or the whistling acid boomerang and of the high-enegy title track, will. After three quality originals, a Burnt Friedman remix of "Knapp Ledsyn" offers a complex and satisfying icing on the cake. The German artist foregrounds a bouncy breakbeat and the synth fuzz for funky serenity with sonic detailing. Trust the veterans—both of them—to get it right.
