Voiski - I'll Be Your Maple Pecan Tonight

  • Who better to channel the "aphotic, experimental and futuristic" sounds of Dekmantel's UFO stage than Parisian artist Voiski? At the festival last year, revellers were put through their paces by artists bending the rules (Objekt, Squarepusher and Clark), heady bookings (Rrose and Shackleton) and dance floor stalwarts (Nina Kravitz and Robert Hood). The Frenchman encompasses all three of these categories, so naturally I'll Be Your Maple Pecan Tonight, his first release for the Dekmantel UFO label, does as well. "Happy Piece" is the EP's percolating outsider, bubbling with colourful Gameboy sounds. "Drama In The Futuristic Cabaret" follows a similar theme down a darker, more persistent trajectory, sounding like a mix of DJ Scotch Egg and Ceephax, albeit with far less furore than either. "Go To A Mountain" is the opposite, a palatial synth reprieve with a sting. "Seriously No" and "Come Back" are caustic, bassy rumblers made purely for the dance. What makes the EP really zing is its obvious consistency. Each track is bound to the same thoughtful, inventive, rave-ready anchor.
