Man Power - The Tourist / Oye

  • It's already been a busy year for both Mexico-based British producer Man Power and ESP Institute, each dropping a number of solid records since January. Geoff Kirkwood's third EP of the year lands on Lovefinger's label, and its two tracks are contenders for its best releases in 2016. Between the anthemic, disco-hued house of "The Tourist" and the glittering acid epic that is "Oye," this 12-inch should find a home in plenty of summertime record bags. The bass-loaded backbone and synthy sparkle of Man Power records like Power Theme and the Trans EP for Throne Of Blood informs The Tourist / Oye, but now Kirkwood gives that sound an edge of sharp percussion and infectious excitability. And yet even with that palpable force behind their grooves, "Oye" feels warm, cosmic and richly melodic, while "The Tourist" moves nimbly over its escalating nine minutes. Appropriately, both tracks feel like long journeys through funky house sounds, so it's to Kirkwood's credit that neither ever lose steam or meander aimlessly. Don't go grabbing for this record in your next warm-up set—The Tourist / Oye is stratospheric peak-hour fare.
