Yaleesa Hall & Malin - Carol

  • Will & Ink's label can be relied on to do things differently. After laying down the groundwork with three solid EPs from the pair, they've since had Yaleesa Hall and Oscillat Music's Malin Génie (or just Malin) keep up the weirdness. Now on the label's ninth record, a trend has emerged. The music's little abstract sounds, firing off like bright sparks, help keep Will & Ink from becoming just another techno label. Carol is the second collaborative release to arrive from Yaleesa Hall & Malin, and as with their first effort, Lucas, this record's assortment of perversions make it stand out. "First Carol" is squelchy and brimming with ticks. It has the same volatile energy of, say, early Akufen. "Second Carol" is pretty straightforward in comparison, a dubby techno cut that keeps Yaleesa Hall & Malin's nonconformities bubbling quietly below the surface. Around the five-minute mark, though, they escape and disrupt the music's sleek forward drive with rambunctious outbursts. Carol's another fine dose of playful rule-bending for DJs who like to shake things up a bit.
