CFCF - On Vacation Remixes

  • Michael Silver's work as CFCF often gets aligned with names that might otherwise make listeners cringe and turn away screaming: Kenny G, Pat Metheny, Phil Collins, the Windham Hill label. Part of CFCF's Grammy-nominated genius has been to straddle that line of taste, making something evocative out of jazz-fusion and adult contemporary tropes (à la The Colours Of Life) without it turning into something resembling Dockers khaki. It's a delicate balance, and on this remix single for his recent International Feel mini-album, On Vacation, that line in the beach sand gets crossed. Apiento has releases on the likes of Claremont 56, Golf Channel and Phantom Island, but his beatless edit of "Chasing" merely adds a few effects to the button accordion and nylon string and calls it a day. The underwhelming results sounds like the kind of track that Woo could more effectively render in their sleep. CFCF's mild update of "Fleurs Laissés Dans Un Taxi" fleshes out the guitar sketch with bits of saxophone and a stiff drum machine, pushing it ever closer towards musical wallpaper. Only the remix of "Pleasure Centre" by LA four-piece Pharoahs gives the single some sort of pulse. With its hand percussion and layered flutes, the track restores a poise similar to CFCF's own, staying on the right side of bliss over bland.
